Studying rocks is a more challenging intellectual pursuit that

Translation requires a tremendous amount of general knowledge, ingenuity,
and knowledge of different cultures. That said, translators are not
necessarily linguists, nor are linguists necessarily translators.

Linguistics is the study of the structure, functions, history, and
affiliations of human language generally, and of the more than 6,000
languages currently spoken, specifically. Given that virtually all of
these languages have geographically, socially, and functionally
conditioned variation, a huge and ever expanding body of data exists,
waiting to be collected, analyzed, and explained as an intellectual
challenge to anyone interested.
