An interesting message in delfi.lt - Lithuania considers simplified
employment procedures for the citizens of Ukraine:

I guess, thumbs down from Henry - or ...?
Evaldas
A wise idea indeed, Evaldai. Short-circuit
the "demand-supply" cycle which, in a
worker-short situation, leads to higher
wages. How then- I ask you - will wages
ever be raised? There will be no need to
do so. And certainly - export your native
labor force out one end while importing a
foreign one through the other! How long will
those people then stay in place - why should
they not move on to greener pastures -
just waiting right in front of them.
Well, maybe the diplomats who came up with this have some ideas how to
prevent this from happening? Or maybe the article did not tell the
whole story - and this would apply just to people who have certain
qualifications - not your 'average Joe' ... errrr Ivan.
As far as I know Lithuania still has the
misfortune of using passports
that are the easiest in the world to forge.
Are you sure about that?
So - oh yah - let Lithuania become a
simple funnel for non-EU labor and see
how much the other EU members like
that. I would also bet dollars to doughnuts
that some of the (ahem) employers would
soon enough find it more profitable to
funnel people than it is to put up
buildings - or whatever.
I would love to see the names of the people
behind this idiocy. I also note that you
did not post the article where employers
I think I've read VP (the owner of maxima supermarket chain) was a
proponent for this. They were concerned with the fact that they could
not find enough people to work in their fast growing chain.
were working on a plan to go out and
attempt to get some of the "export labor"
to return with offers of higher wages.
I would love to see that. Also note that the wages are not the whole
story - I think what matters a lot is the job satisfaction (position,
the job one does) - or on a broader scale - the satisfaction with your
life. Wages certainly play a part here, but I think this is not the
only factor.
Now I just bet you would find *that*
to be a lousy idea and give your
"thumbs down" - no?
No - see above.
