Contrary to common belief, the new Member States of the European Union
abound in environmental riches, among which many types of fauna and
flora unknown or long forgotten by western Europeans. The challenge at
present is to preserve these countless unspoiled landscapes, forests
and wetlands for future generations to enjoy while integrating these
new Member States in the enlarged European single market.
