The struggle was between neither ideologies nor ethnicities, it was a
struggle where the totalitarian Soviet state apparatus tried to hinder the
break-away of nations that it had procured as spoils from its deals with
Hitler, Churchill and Roosevelt.

Our eastern neighbour is an empire, not an ideology. We are fooling
ourselves in a very dangerous way if we ever forget that. Stop trying to
differentiate between 'democratic' Russia, Soviet Russia and Czarist
Russia -- they are all the same from our viewpoint.

After 40 years in Finland you still haven't learned to think the way members
of small nations do and must do. Russia is the only conceivable threat to
our security. We must watch it with the utmost suspicion, constantly. We
must maintain a strong defense, based on state of the art technology,
universal military service and a general will to defend ourselves (in this
respect I'm proud of our young men). And we must enter alliances that make
it very clear where we stand and belong.

The presidential election debate has confirmed that the day when Finland
joins NATO is not far away. When we do, we will actually strengthen NATO.
