P.S. And lest that emphasized high culture, that's true at every level,
too -- most Latvians talk to Lithuanians in Russian, and are obviously
not unhappy to do so. Why should they be? In fact, I know Latvians who
speak bad Lithuanian and are asked to speak Russian as soon as we cross
the border -- it's the language most people are more comfortable in if
they don't speak the other Baltic language, and until more people learn
English that will be so... and even then, a lot of Latvians will
probably be more fluent in Russian because there is so much Russian
around, many are from a mixed background, etc. As the occupation
retreats in time and Latvian continues to establish itself, there is
less and less of a reason to bear a grudge.
