Russian democracy at work: the LDPR on re-acquiring Alaska

This is an example of the kind of maniac who would like to replace Putin.

The LDPR received nearly 12 percent of the vote in the State Duma
elections in 2003, and is notorious for its leader¹s often outlandish
comments.
Zhirinovsky has proposed the re-acquisition of Alaska through the use of
military force, the invasion of Iran, and the construction of large fans
to blow Russia¹s nuclear waste into Germany.

For those who read Russian, one of the most absurd pieces of political
propaganda that I have ever seen is to be found at
http://www.ldpr.ru/news/news_186.html. Briefly, it is titled "A
humanitarian action of the LDPR. We will return Alaska and save America!
It claims that 38 million Americans are living in starvation, and that the
White House would like to provide them with hamburgers and Coke, but cannot
afford to, due to the $3.3 trillion external debt. Thus, the LDPR proposes
that America sell Alaska to Russia, not for one trillion "dirty dollars",
but for 666,666,666,667 hamburgers. Each would be packed in a container
with the words "Daily food ration" and a label that read "As partial
payment for the lands of Alaska". Russians are urged to write to the White
House and the local American ambassador. They are also urged to find an
American, treat him to a hamburger and Coke, and then have him sign a
promissory note, the wording of which is given, that the American will
contribute the value of the meal to the Russian fund for the purchase of
Alaska.

It is meant as satire, I am sure, but it reinforces the opinion held by
many Russians that Alaska is really Russian territory that the USA
acquired by subterfuge.
