The UN has done a good job keeping the world at relative peace since 1945.
UN agencies have also played a major role in disaster relief, disease
control, women's issues, and education.

The OSCE did extremely important work overseeing human rights monitoring
efforts in the former Soviet Union as well as in the countries that
emerged from the USSR. The Baltic countries would not have the respected
international status that they have today if they had not cooperated
closely with the OSCE in doing such things as drawing up legislation
pertaining to the status of minorities, observing the implementation of
language tests for citizenship in Estonia and Latvia, and reviewing the
trials concerning the possible deportation of former members of the Soviet
military and intelligence services from the Baltic countires.

Given that Russia occupies one seventh of the surface of the planet and is
the largest country in both Europe and Asia, it would be impossible to
have any kind of world organization without Russian participation.

You would still have to uinclude Russia as well as a large number of other
countries that you might not happen to like.

Hey, Russians are eople, too! They have just as much of a right to belong
and be herd in international organizations as anyboy else. Or do you long
for a world in which the fate of the planet is decided in smoke-filled
rooms in London, Paris, and Washington D.C.?

Yadda, yadda, yadda. We are getting along quite well, thank you very much.
And the Euro, despite your dire predictions to the contrary before it was
introduced, is still trading at a rate close to 20% higher than the
dollar. We must be doing something right.

Like the EU, NATO also acknowledges the geopolitical realities and
coordinates many of its policies and actions with Russia.

That's his take and he is entitled to it. The OSCE is not as important as
it was ten years ago because it made such a great contribution then to
resolving problems and conflicts. Its current "minimal relevance" is
attributable to its being a victim of its own success.

The creation of the OSCE back in 1975 resulted in the internationalization
of human rights abuses. That gave an internationally recognized legal
basis for the process that eventually led to the collapse of the USSR.

For a more up-beat view on the OSCE, "the world's largest regional
security organization whose 55 participating States span the geographical
area from Vancouver to Vladivostok," see its website at
http://www.osce.org/.
