I agree that you can't trust forums in that way -- I mean, I don't
think Yahoo boards are representative of the American people, either.
But dialogi.lv has a _very_ narrow audience, I suspect (in large part
people _devoted_ to a certain strain of liberalism... ), whereas DELFI
is narrow in another way (they're above 15, and a few seem to work for
government ministries...). And fora drive people away, too -- e.g., Hui
the representative of the whole Ur-Lettish nation confined to the
asylums of Hoosierdom, for example, has doubtless frightened away a few
souls with the help of his sidekick. I don't even bother reading DELFI
anymore, unless to learn the latest slang. Still, you get _some_ sense
of what people are thinking. Any way of trying to figure that out has
its limitations -- surveys aren't reliable, either. Look at the stories
that provoke gobs of posts at DELFI, and the stories that cause
crossover from delfi.ru to delfi.lv, or even delfi.lt or delfi.ee. Note
the peaks -- e.g., if a Eurocrat makes a comment on official
bilingualism, a few hours will see a huge number of posts, as will
anything else provocative, e.g. gay "pride." I guess I would ask -- how
_do_ you judge a rise or fall in hatred, or a deepening of divisions? I
take my cue from comments overheard -- a few years ago, people who were
once quite content to use Latvian started refusing to use it "on
principle." In the last couple of years, people who had seemed neutral
have sometimes taken sides.
