Look what has this fool of a Prime Minister has got us into

It was bad enough that John Howard's slavish adoration of George Bush
got us into Iraq, but there at least we were doing something there that
kept our military personnel more or less out of harm's way and tended
not to antagonise the locals. But following that American idiot into an
increase in the military commitment in Afghanistan is something else
altogether.

The Taliban leadership know perfectly well that there is an election
coming up in Australia towards the end of this year. They also know that
Australian troops have been sent into one of the most dangerous parts of
the country. They know that the more casualties amongst the Australians
there are, the more unpopular Howard will get. Therefore our troops will
be targeted, and we will face more and more casualties. For nothing.

Let's be clear. Afghanistan is as unwinnable a war as the way it has
been prosecuted in Iraq. If outsiders persist in being there, it will
still end with a pullout and it will still end ultimately in a boost to
Talibanisation in Asia, from the Middle East to Indonesia. Nothing our
troops can do will stop this. Only a sane political process that deals
with the real issues can save first Afghanistan, then Pakistan, and then
other states from extremist Islam. Only getting out of Iraq will start
the process of settling down the violence in that country.

But what I object to is that Howard has sent these men and women into
this danger hoping that it will somehow it will give him leverage in the
forthcoming election - though God knows how he thinks that can happen,
short of a huge expansion of the war in the Middle East, which Bush is
certainly contemplating to recapture lost ground at home. And that will
be even more folly than present policy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Don't be fooled. Our presence in both these countries cannot assist the
so-called war on terror - it can only make the terrorists stronger.
