SUMMARY OF "AMERICAN OPTIONS IN IRAQ"
As of the year end of 2004, the American invasion of Iraq --
which condemned by the world and considered "illegal" by
the United Nations -- appears to have three major options.
The three options were elaborated detail in the article
by W.R. Polk, a former US State Department Official.
These are:
1. The so-call 'stay on cause' option: the American invaders
may continue to occupy another 4-5 years or more, regardless of
Iraqi civilian and their own servicemen casualties. Whether
this will be a good option, the author appears to suggest
the world's history of liberation struggles to a guide.
(a) The armed resistance by the Iraqi people against
the occupying power is legitimate in any historical
contexts. The media, depend on the side, tends to portray
US Occupying power as "Liberators/Invaders" and the
Iraqi resistance as "terrorists/freedom fighters". No matters.
Within Iraqi borders, any form of resistance that deployed
by Iraqis to expel the foreign powers is justified.
(b) Staying on occupation for 4-5 years will unlikely
produce any positive outcome. Whether US troops can "pacify"
Iraqi resistance by mean of force during that time might be
a question, but will it be a wise solution ?
2. The so-called "Vietnamization" option: Local troops
that can be trained to served the puppet Iraqi government
lawyal to the United States. The author suggest this option
is a mere fantasy.
3. The "successfully retreat" option: The author suggest
America to declare "unequivocally ... give up its lock on
the Iraqi economy.... allow Iraqi oil production to be
govern by Iraqis." And then withdraw US occupation forces
out of Iraq unconditionally.
Though there is another option, which seems lurking around
Baghdad nowadays. What if the Americans do "quick and dirty"
election, get what they want [i.e. signed contracts with a
"legitimate" Iraqi government], and then make a retreat ?
In this light, the UN refusing to be involved in coming
election in Iraq was much understandable(see IPS news cuts.)
