Guantanamo Suicides Inflame World

London, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) The suicide of three prisoners at the
US naval base of Guantanamo, a portion of illegally occupied Cuban
territory, has had an extensive repercussion, and been termed an act
of desperation and tragedy.

According to the British BBC radio and TV channel, lawyers of the
prisoners denounced that their decision to take their own lives was
due to their state of desperation, without hope of being released.

The three inmates hung themselves in their cells with their own
clothes, and the news spread like wildfire since they were the first
suicides reported in that prison.

The UN Rapporteur for Torture Manfred Nowak called for the European
Union to demand the United should close that prison during the next
week"s summit with President George W. Bush.

Since 2002, the US government has kept there over 500 men captured in
Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries, calling them enemy
combatants to deny their rights as war prisoners established by the
Geneva Convention.
