Workfare then was percieved as a cheap option to reduce unemployment
understandable considering the Job training schemes that the Thatcher
goverment rolled out then; gave Workfare a bad name.
I can't see how it would be well received in SA. The government is
often criticised for not creating enough jobs. I'm not sure that this
is the function of a government, but the silly fools keep on promising
so many thousand new jobs per month so they have made a rod for their
own back.
If they were to introduce workfare here then I think they'd come under
even more fire from those who criticise them for not doing enough for
job creation, and they'd also come under fire from the unions for
taking jobs away from union members and for taking advantage of the
unemployed when they could clearly have created a number of permanent
positions instead.
