Aus moslem bomb plot man jailed for 20 years

Sydney - An Australian man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday
for a nascent plot to attack the country's power grid that the judge said
was aimed at making Australians live in constant fear of bomb attacks.

Pakistan-born architect Faheem Khalid Lodhi, 36, was convicted by a New
South Wales state supreme court jury in June on charges of possessing a
bomb-making manual, trying to buy chemicals capable of making explosives and
obtaining maps of the national power grid in preparation for a terrorist
attack.

Lodhi's case was one of the first launched under tough anti-terror laws
passed in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the
United States.

The laws have come under heavy criticism from civil liberties groups, who
say the burden of proof for criminal cases is now lower, making guilty
verdicts more likely.

'Advance the cause of violent jihad'

In sentencing, Justice Anthony Whealy acknowledged Lodhi's plot was only at
a preliminary stage - the exact target, the building of the bomb and who
would place it hadn't been worked out - but said it was a serious crime
under the new laws, which were designed to be preventative.

He said Lodhi's actions "displayed an intention on his part that a violent
terrorist act or acts would be carried out in Australia" and that his
purpose was "to advance the cause of violent jihad".

"It carried the obvious consequence that, if carried out, it would instil
terror into members of the public so that they could never again feel free
from the threat of bombing attacks within Australia," Whealy said.

Parole in 2019

Whealy sentenced Lodhi to 20 years in prison for the chemicals charge and 10
years on each of the charges of buying the maps and having 15 pages of
handwritten notes in Urdu with instructions for making poisons, bombs and
other explosives.

The three sentences were to be served at the same time and were backdated to
Lodhi's 2004 arrest, making him eligible for parole in 2019. He had faced a
life sentence on each charge.
