(CBS4 News) SOUTH MIAMI South Miami police are investigating a shooting
involving a University of Miami football player.

UM student Willie Cooper, 21, was shot in the buttocks at his home
located at 6521 SW 58th Place. Cooper is a Junior linebacker for the
Hurricanes.

He shares that home with two other players. They are Brandon
Meriweather, a Senior Safety and Ryan Moore, a Senior Wide Receiver.

According to the players, at around 6:45 a.m. they spotted a suspicious
car pull up in front of their home. A masked gunman got out and started
shooting. Meriwether and Cooper walked to the corner of the residence
where they saw one black male crotched down next to their home.

According to police, Meriweather yelled at the black male at which time
the male jumped up and shot one time hitting Cooper in the buttocks.
When Cooper was shot its believed Meriweather pulled a pistol from his
pants pocket and fired three times at the assailant, who jumped a fence
and fled with another person in an older model blue Audi, police said.

Meriweather used his gun legally, and it was unclear whether the
assailant was hit, police said.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, 6?2?, over 200 pounds.

Police do not have a motive for the shooting.

Cooper was taken to South Miami Hospital for treatment of what appeared
to be a superficial wound. When police arrived at the scene, they said
he was up and walking around.

The University of Miami athletic department released a statement saying
it was cooperating with the police investigation.

"Until the investigation is complete, we will not have any additional
comment," the statement said.

The house where Cooper lives is owned by Hurricanes defensive backs
coach Tim Walton and rented to players with approval from the school's
compliance office.

Cooper is from St. Augustine. He?s majoring in Liberal Arts.
