Tyler police are continuing to investigate the sexual assault of a
teenager Thursday afternoon at a home in the 700 block of Sixth Street.

The victim told police a man entered the residence through an open back
door and sexually assaulted her, and she fought him off before he fled
the area.

Police responded and used a tracking dog in an attempt to locate the
man, but were unable to pick up a trail.

Chief Gary Swindle said investigators gathered evidence at the scene.

"Based on the struggle and the evidence obtained at the scene, we
believe the incident occurred as she told officers," he said. "There
were minor injuries suffered during the struggle."

Police continue their search for a suspect who might have committed a
string of assaults over the past year.

In one incident a white female in her mid-20s, was assaulted at a
residence on West Erwin Street after she left her door open for
ventilation in November.

"When she returned to the front living area, a black male suspect was
standing in her residence with a fold-up pocketknife.

The suspect sexually assaulted her at knifepoint and left the residence
on foot," Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Don Martin
said at the time.

Another assault occurred on North Bois d'Arc Avenue in February of this
year when a suspect entered the woman's home.

In another assault, the assailant claimed to be a police officer to gain
entrance into a home on Franklin Street in April.

Swindle said police did not believe at this time that the Thursday
attacker, described by the teenage victim as a black man in his 30s or
40s, was the same attacker that has sexually assaulted several women
over the past year.

"The method of operation was totally different in this case," he said.
"In the other cases the suspect attacked older women, and this was a
teenager."

Swindle said citizens should take precautions to ensure their safety.

"I don't care how safe you think you are in your own home - lock the
doors, lock the windows and make sure you know someone before you open
the door," he said.
