Police headed to New Orleans

?Unfortunately they're being shot at by looters, just a whole bunch of
different problems they're having,? Officer Cornish says. ?They have to
be kept safe. It's just like everybody else.?

Police headed to New Orleans

There is simply no other way to say it; Hurricane Katrina devastated the
Gulf Coast, especially New Orleans.

?The circumstances down there are so awful, it's almost like a
third-world country and they need a whole lot more protection then they
have right now,? says Wichita Police Officer Chad Cornish.

He wants to provide that protection.

?It's inherent. All cops everywhere they see this stuff on the news and
they just want to go down and help,? Officer Cornish says.

Police in New Orleans need that help right now. Before the storm, the
department had about 1600 officers. Some evacuated with their families
and others quit. Those who are left are worn out and asking for help.

?There's a brotherhood and a sisterhood here between law enforcement
that I think people know exist,? says Deputy Chief Tom Stolz. ?That's
why a lot officers feel the need to help down there.?

Officer Cornish and at least a couple other officers from Wichita are
answering that call for help, heading to the gulf coast to help protect
the people, possibly utility workers.

?Unfortunately they're being shot at by looters, just a whole bunch of
different problems they're having,? Officer Cornish says. ?They have to
be kept safe. It's just like everybody else.?

It's Officer Cornish and others from Wichita who will soon be on their
way to the Gulf Coast, to keep them safe.
