Damage, Looting Reported Throughout Beaumont

(BEAUMONT, Texas) -- In the east Texas town of Beaumont, trees and power
lines are down, electricity is out, and the area continues to get
pounded by heavy rain.

It is close to where Hurricane Rita made landfall overnight, packing
winds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Police have made several arrests for looting of homes and businesses.
They are continuing to check on businesses, including some where
security alarms were sounding.

Windows have been blown out of a number of stores and businesses.

A surgeon at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth says the facility lost
power and water service overnight. A main building at the hospital is
operating with a generator.
