While the latter is silly, the former isn't. The idea of pride in
one's country flows from the concept that you're *responsible* for the
state of it in some way. One of the reasons lots of other countries
and cultures hate the US is this attitude that our country's actions
have nothing to do with us, it's citizens - "Hey, buddy, I just live
there." If you're not proud of your country, you should be working to
make it a place worthy of pride, or ashamed of yourself for doing
nothing.
