Be aware--many people (including almost all etiquette
experts, but also many ordinary folk who are just too polite
to say anything about it) consider these inappropriate. Gifts
are gifts. No one is required to give you a gift, and those
who *do* want to give you a gift get to decide what to give
and how much to spend on it. *IF* they want to give cash,
they know perfectly well how to do it. If they do not want
to give cash, that's absolutely their prerogative, and it's
not really your business to try to dissuade them. What you
do with any gifts after you receive them is your business,
but one doesn't, as they say, look a gift horse in the mouth.
About as close as you can come while still observing
propriety is to tell folks who ask that you have all you
need and you're just looking forward to their presence on
your special day. If they don't ask, then you don't say
anything at all about it (and most certainly don't mention
any suggestions or registries in invitations or any other
means other than a response to a direct question about where
you're registered or what you'd like).
