somehow i think it's more than 2 reasons, and if israel wanted to wipe out the palestinians, it would have done it by now
While I agree that there are more than two reasons I also agree with Duckman's assertion if you replace the word sole with primary. Sure, Israel could wipe out the Palestinians by military means but the world (and the US) could not turn a blind eye to that level of aggression. The US has had a pretty shady history in the region. <understatement>The US greed for oil and the willingness to exploit military might has not been good for relationship building</understatement>.
