Some 35 years ago, a family friend, who was a policeman, emigrated to
Australia. He applied to join the police in Melbourne (IIRC) who welcomed
him with open arms until he said that he was an atheist! As there was
then no provision in the courts for affirming, they turned him down (after
asking him to effectively lie by swearing on the bible when called to give
evidence).

ouch. if that happened today they'd be in real trouble, especially with the
push for integration and multiculturalism the governments trying to
implement at the moment. also, it'd be extremely stupid as the local police
force (coincidentally, i live in melbourne) is severely understaffed, they
need as many people as they can get!
