The problem with the Christian Bible is that there is no way to separate
out the good moral guidance from the parables, the poetry, the
fascinating stories, and the patently impossible events (virgin birth,
life after death, humans who lived 900 years, etc.)
Once, many years ago, I had a Bible where the words of the Lord appeared
in red type.
Here's a suggestion: Someone should produce a Bible with the great
truths of mankind in green; the parables (not to be taken literally) in
blue, the outright lies in purple, and other bits and pieces -- take
your pick.
Mark Twain had it figured out:
"It (the Bible) is full of interest. It has noble poetry in it; and
some clever fables; and some blood-drenched history; and some good
morals; and a wealth of obscenity; and upwards of a thousand lies."
--Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910) "Mark Twain"
Let's have a Bible where we can find what it is we are looking for. Of
course, if anyone ever did produce such a Bible, it would mark the
beginning of the downfall of Christianity!
