What part of "absence of religion" don't you understand?

Some Buddhists do not believe in any gods and therefore are considered
to be atheists. Despite following a religion, they are atheists.

Some atheists might subscribe to a "religion" like Church of Virus
http://www.churchofvirus.org/ and that's fine. Its their belief in
deities which solely defines their atheism.

You could even be a non-believing Christian I suppose if you decide to
adopt a biblical system of ethics but didn't actually subscribe to the
supernatural side of it. Then again, since most religions have a
fairly similar morality system (almost all include some varation on "do
unto others as you would have them do unto you") an atheist Christian
wouldn't be that different to an atheist of some other
religion/philosophy.

So you can mix and match whatever principles you like, but the only one
which defines an atheist is the lack of belief in any gods.

No its not, atheism just means lack of belief in any deities. That's
it.

There is nothing to promote in atheism. You may be confusing this with
Secular Humanism, but even Humanists are not evangelical about it.

Secular means you don't have a religious angle at all. If you want to
do charity work you don't generally do it under a specifically atheist
banner, you do it under the banner of a secular group.

That's like starting a basketball club for non-tennis players. There
is no reason to exclude tennis players from a basketball club, so
making non-tennis playing a condition of membership seems a bit silly.

Nobody is confused except you, atheism has nothing to do with
nationalism or its absence, any more than basketball has something to
do with the absence of a fondness for tennis.
