significance of studying statistical distributions??

Dear friends,
My advisor suggest me to study the statistical distributions, but
don't tell me significance of studying statistical distributions. I
think it over and over again, but still can't find any great
significance. What's your opinion on the significance of statistical
distributions? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.
