"contributes independent variance" basically means that a particular
variable (in this case, shared pretence) is important even after we
have already accounted for the effect of other factors (e.g. sex, age,
amount of alcohol consumed).
An example of NOT contributing independent variance would be :
If we know the length of a rectangle, and we know the width a
rectangle, and we have fit the correct model, adding the area of the
rectangle as another variable wouldn't contribute anything (since area
= length * width)
