independent variance

Hi,

I am a translator struggling with a statistical concept and I was wondering
if you can help me understand its meaning. The concept is: independent
variance. I know what "variance" means, but I'm not sure about the meaning
of "independent" in the following context.

"What the friendship research has shown is that such talk is especially
likely to take place in the context of the intimate play and conversation of
friends, and that the experience of shared pretence between friends
contributes independent variance to a wide range of later socio-cognitive
outcomes".

Could it mean that the experience of shared pretence alone accounts for
variance in a wide range of later socio-cognitive outcomes? Does any of you
possibly know how this concept is called in Italian?

Thank you very much for your help

Alberto
