Like modern physics? Where its more important to have beautiful
mathematics than to have an experiment to back up the theory?
You must be thinking of string theory and/or quantum gravity, where
this is indeed the case. In most other areas of physics, researchers
are generally skeptical of ideas which have very little to no
experimental evidence. String theory is one of the few exceptions
over the last 20+ years.
