Today's WSJ, LTE from Peter Kilgore, Acting Pres & CEO of Nat Rest Assoc,

That's all fine and good, but what does one have to do to earn it?

You've never been in a restaurant?

Eating at a restaurant only gives you a glimpse of what the servers go
through. Check out bitterwaitress.com - the forums for a real-life
perspective. I have no idea why, but a large percentage of the population
seems to think that servers are *servants*. A few seem to find it a fun game
to run a server ragged. I have customer contact in my IT job and still I
wouldn't take on a waitressing gig unless the pay was around $100K/year.

Do you think you'd like a cash register job at a convenience store better,
at $7-8/hour?

Well, if all I could get were minimum wage jobs, yeah. Clerking would
be boring, but you don't depend on tips to bring your income to reasonable
levels, therefore you don't have to put up with being treated as a slave.
Except for the possibility of being shot if you work in a store in a bad area
(it's interesting that cops call them "Stop and Rob" stores), it wouldn't be
bad at all.
