700 jobs in R&D (so, probably about 100-150 PhDs, rest techs, support
staff, QC).

I wonder how soon the entire R&D division will be outsourced overseas.

I think the absolute main factor will be the exchange rates. The money
doesn't care what or where the warm body is as long as its cheap.

More below...

its amazing how fast this mess hit the fan isnt it? From 10 years
ago when we were saying the brain work, R and D, management,
engineering and banking will be the US forte... to blowing a big
chunk of the entire gig... and even importing construction labor now
80% levels or so. and for instance half of our forces in Iraq are
with Blackwater Inc... 150,000 mercinaries (one of GWB's right wing
bubble thumper fanatics...thats a very recent thing, from zero a few
years ago to 200,000 paid mercinaries..not a bad google search....
Wackenhut, private prisons, is not a a bad search either.).

Phil has an important point, here. I don't know how many persons in Iraq
are being paid with US$ BUT are 3rd party (eg. NGOs), but all 3rd party
entities are NOT subject to, gor example, Geneva conventions wrt wars and
procedures, etc. There have been troubles with NGOs in Russia and India
and we're not getting the whole story.

Of course, Iran (etc.) could very well be "sponsoring" (or encouraging
trouble-making for the USA in a similar manner). And, of course, what the
CIA does, as an official entity connected to the US govt (unlike 3rd party
NGOs) according to how it feels that it is not obligated to tell anyone
about, is also open for moral/ethical discussion and analysis, as well.

Ever wonder how much of your tax dollar is under the control of elected
officials vs. unelected officials or part of "open" government?

the blackwater mercinaires earn 300 dollars a day, blackwater inc
bills the US govt 900 dollars a day per man. They are recruiting up
here in the boon docks where I am doing a small project.. its a
$40,000 sign up bonus, and $70,000 for college. The daily rate wasnt
mentioned but its a non secret.. $300 a day on average.. many getting
more no doubt, chopper pilots etc.

the ad (posted at a grocery store) said they wanted to hire and train
'assault troups' their logo was a fairly short stubby set of eagle
wings turned up at each end forming a vague W shape... low in the
center. The blackwater term wasnt used.

$300/day to the guy, $600 overhead to the corporation. Pretty good markup, wouldn't you say?

1/4 mil/year bottom line gross profit/warm body.

So, what, a $billion buys about 4,000 troops/year? Ten bil buys 40,000? Ten bil is chickenfeed compared to the DoD budget.

Signup bonus, college. Not too bad. What's the chance of coming back alive, or one piece? Did they say anything about fringe benefits, pensions, hospitalization (you know, minefields, grenades, bullet wounds, etc)?

Not to sound too cynical, but I think doing it for the money would be easier to swallow than doing it for democracy/freedom...if you get my drift.

At least they are up front about the "assault troops" part.

Any requirement for citizenship? stuff like that? Speak english? Etc.?
