They didn't come by that naturally. Many were brought up that way at home
and the educational system now has the attitude that if the students want
something, they not only deserve it, they'll get it, too.
It isn't a relatively recent thing. This happened going back more
than a century, even in families which had their origins dating back
to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
A long time ago, kids didn't even have to attend high school. In many
places, mandatory education was only until grade 7 or 8 in those
days. Even further back in time, kids didn't even have to attend
school at all. The "innovation" of mandatory education was mainly to
keep kids off the streets during the day.
Typically what happens is the first generation left the "old
country" (ie. europe, etc ...), and worked hard in America. The next
generation may or may not still work hard, depending on how wealthy
the family became and/or what values the parents instilled in the
kids.
The third and subsequent generations seem to take everything for
granted, even in cases of downward class mobility (ie. rich kids who
do nothing and squander the family wealth on booze, drugs, etc ...).
These are the sort of kids who try to become a rock star, movie star,
artist, bohemian, etc ...
.
