There was a show on PBS a while back about
American "English" (or should it be "American"
English?), how it differs across the country, and
how it is evolving.

I saw that show, hosted by Robert McNeil....a Canadian. (Interesting, no?)

It presented two basic schools
of thought, one being that we need to protect the
rules and the other being we should embrace the
evolution.

I noticed that.


I'd reply something like, "Perhaps, but I doubt if we
should accept you as arbiter of which evolutionary
line to follow." Of course, I probably wouldn't last
long as a teacher with such an elitist attitude. ;-)

English isn't the only language that has been considered as evolving or, as some may put it, subject corruption. Canada is officially bilingual and some people expressed concern about how English words and phrases have crept into the French that is spoken, resulting in what's been referred to as "Franglais".
