Learn something new every day. Actually, given the
way the pronunciation of vowels can change over time,
maybe that's an advantage.
Chinese isn't written phonetically at all. Though interesting is that
written Chinese from 2000+ years ago is actually readable today by
anybody who can read Chinese. Despite the large number of different
dialects of Chinese, the writing has remained the same for over 2000+
years.
In contrast, they figured out that ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics was
actually phonetic. The Rosetta stone literally acted as a
translation table between hieroglyphics, coptic, and greek. It's
interesting how they're able to decipher old extinct languages, from
the writings alone.
