We may be devolving. I just finished reading a book
on runes, and not only wasn't spelling fixed (a relatively
recent idea), the futhark (alphabet) changed over time,
and in fact in some areas dropped about 30% of the
letters leaving it difficult to represent certain sounds.

While I was teaching, I remarked about how bad some of my students spelled. The response I got was that I shouldn't worry about it because language is "evolving".

Go figure.
