In my experience, the entire process is flawed and biased. How one scores
on one's appraisal is heavily dependent on how one's relations with the
boss are.

The new HR policy at the Indian Casino where one of my friends works
is that unless you were on report and about to get fired, or you were
at the top of your pay scale, every employee got a 6% raise this (or
last?) year, no matter their performance.

What does it take to get hired there? Are they looking for help?

Not much. Depends upon what you want to do. They always have jobs
open. If you work in a job related to gaming (i.e., not service/
custodial), you need to go through DOJ and FBI background checks and
pass. Dishwashers start at like $10/hr. If you want to deal cards,
they train you, and dealers make $20-25/hr with tips. My friend told
me if I got laid off, she could almost gaurantee me a job in her
department (entertainment, VIP Services) starting at $17/hr with no
experience. An ex college prof used to work for her. They have a lot
of older people which they, being smart managers, value as employees.
People who aren't unrealistically ambitious (therefore, not
necessarily back-stabbers) whose outside world work experience they
appreciate and utilize.

If I were younger, I'd look into it. It sounds like a plain old decent job; do your work and you get paid. And, if you keep doing your work, you'll have the job until you retire or until the place goes out of existence.
