A kid today is going to look better to an employer if he/she actually
works a few years and i) makes the money for tuition, and ii) gets
"college of hard knocks" education in the process and can put that on the
resume and have "real life" to talk about in an interview,

Get out of here ! If you are an employer and you are looking to hire a
faculty, and you have a stack of CVs in front of you, you will cull
down the CVs that are "less-than-ideal" (meaning that there was not
straight climbing through the prestigeous places), and you will pick
up the CV of a "golden boy".

What is your definition of a "golden boy"? And, just for the record,
during my career I hired several technicians out of about 60-70 resumes
and also hired three (postdoc) visiting scientists (Russia and East
Europe) on long terms and one more visiting scientist (France) on a
short term, but knew from their prior publications what they could do. I
also had a WHO fellow (China) who went on to get a PhD in another lab, and
a graduate student from Germany (we got two peer-reviewed publications from
his work over a two month summer), who now is an assistant professor in
Germany.

Since I recommend against academic science, in general, and recommend
_for_ jobs in the commercial world, I would value real life job
experience, unlike yourself who said he prefers "govt labs where you don't
have to show up on time" and still get paid. Or, how about this: do you
think I would hire you for a job with me as boss?

When I was unemployed for a long period of time last time, my path
crossed the path of a priest who was a social activist in the local
university and had a reputation there. He told me he could speak to
the professors and see that they could hire me or recommend me to
professor somewhere else (Soon after that, I finally got a job
somewhere else, so that he did not do anything for me). The priest
told me that he prefereed to work in the private organisations as
opposed to the government ones. He said that there was too much of
inefficiency and backstabbing etc in the government organisations. The
private companies for him were concentrated on what he coud do for
them, and thus he enjoyed that atmosphere. As for me, all the private
comapnies I worked for were about humiliating me and treating me like
a dirt. They were not really interested in what I can do for them.
Thus, surprisingly, we had a totally opposite experience. I explained
it to myself that the difference was in our cultural backgrounds. My
expectation was a place where I could be intellectually stimulated,
get self-realisation and get a security. He probably worked in the
places where intellectual work was not required. He was there just for
fun of it and for camaraderie.

Now, it is you that can get out of here!

Uhmm... I feel you are pissed off.

You feel correctly and validly.

This was just a manner of speech. I
looked into the dictionary of American English, and this phrase was
mentioned as an equivalent to "I do not believe you" and used as an
interconnector in conversation and to encourage the interlocutor to go
on.

Tone does not come accross well when _literal_ is best.

Otherwise, you did not define "golden boy." When I picked people to interview to work for me, the resume had to be pretty good, and then the talk had to be pretty good, too. In one hiring, I rejects all applicants and re-advertised the position.
