Interesting question. In the recent case of Knut,
the polar bear cub, they wanted people to kill
him rather than having him live in an unnatural
environment, so maybe they wouldn't mind Johnny
killing the ants rather than letting them live in
the unnatural environment of the backyard (with
all the crumbs from Bar-B-Qs disrupting their
natural foraging habits, etc.). Hmmm, I wonder
if PETA opposes me putting up bird feeders and
bird houses in my backyard? In addition to
messing up the natural order of more birds
starving to death, there is a ground squirrel
that has discovered that the ground squirrel
equivalent of a 7-11 has been built next door
to his home.
I've got a number of snowshoe hares that live in a nearby schoolyard. I leave them carrot peels and the like which I know they gladly devour. Some of them cross the street and come into the apartment complex to feed. A number of my fellow tenants have caught on to this and leave them kitchen scraps like leftover lettuce.
It turns out that there are hares all over the city. Some of them must come up from the river valley or, in my area, from the bush along a creek a few kilometres away.
In addition, we sometimes have ducks and geese that winter here, largely due to the hot water produced by the city's main power station keeping part of the river ice-free. During our last el Nino winter, we didn't have a lot of snow until January, which suited them quite nicely. Some of them even came onto the university campus to feed.
