Those are the showings that all the teenyboppers go to, right? Since I

it's a good thing that I don't go to movies any more.

For the most part it's the teenybopper and college kid crowds, which
commonly show up for the Friday and Saturday evening screenings.
Whenever they have midnight screenings, it seems to be mostly college
kids.

And when they come home, they carry one with loud parties, which I often have to endure where I live.

And people wonder why I listen to classical and opera. When there's a good
recording from, say, Cecilia Bartoli or Isabel Bayrakdarian, it's going to
be around for quite a while and I can easily get a copy long after its
initial release. CDs like that tend to stay in the catalogue for a long
time and then are issued afterwards as budget recordings. The cases and
the booklets often aren't as elaborate, but the recording itself is identical.

I've heard that classical music these days has drastically different
market dynamics than the pop music market.

In many respects, it's dying, though its rumoured demise has been rather exaggerated.

It seems to function in a
similar manner as independent record companies. In the indie record
label business, selling 25,000 copies of a title is considered
outstanding in some genres. For the large major record companies
(ie. EMI, Sony, etc ...), they require sales figures of a half
million copies (or even more) being sold in order to at least break
even in covering the production and marketing costs.

With someone like Bartoli or Bayrakdarian or a group like Tafelmusik, sales like that are possible. One label that's doing well is Naxos. It releases good music and performances but often by lesser-known artists with the recording prices being often less than half that of the other labels.

I don't watch my DVDs all the time, either, but if one I have in my
collection happens to be shown on TV, I might watch my copy about the same
time or at my earliest convenience. Sometimes, I might decide to have my
own film festival, so I might, say, decide that Friday nights will be set
aside for movies of a certain theme such as "Star Trek" or "Jurassic Park".

For some strange reason, I find that I have less and less patience
with watching television and/or movie videos/DVDs, over the years as I
got older. I find I have a harder and harder time sitting still to
watch anything passively, whether it's on TV, a live concert, a
theater, a live play, a lecture, etc .... Though I can still sit in
front of the computer and read web pages and/or pdf files, while
listening to crappy music on the headphones.

(I'm not really sure what exactly is happening).

I seldom sit through a movie or TV show as I've usually doing something else while it's on. It would have to be something extraordinary for me to park myself in front of my telly and concentrate on it. The HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" is an example of what might severely tempt me to do so, and with good reason.
