Most documentaries and news segments about Mensa I've seen over the
years, did not exactly portray the organization in a very flattering
light. Besides the portrayal of members being geekish, socially
inept, eccentric, etc ..., I got the impression many of the shows also
went out of their way to make Mensa members look stupid or silly, by
asking many "trick questions" and "gotcha" type of questions to random
members.

Yup. My former colleagues often asked me whether I saw that "Fifth Estate" piece. I think some of them did that to see what my reaction would be. I don't know what they expected from an educated member of Mensa--maybe they thought I'd be spouting theorems and derivations all the time, thus confirming what the documentary showed.

Or they can get away with saying certain things. This NG got quite wild
and wooly at times in the last year or two.

Most of the unmoderated physics and math newsgroups have been like
that too for a long time. Tons of crackpots and generally stupid
posts. A complete waste of time.

I've seen some of the math newgroups. There's ample evidence that Godwin's Law might actually be true.
