I work in another industry where the major companies used
to maintain fancy research campuses until the restructuring
fads of the 1990s. What little R&D that survived was deployed
into the operational units. I saw three of these campuses
bulldozed this decade to turn into McMansions or Walmarts
because of their real estate value.
