That is why I am saying that we need alternative source of
energy.
Might be solar, might be nuclear fusion or both or something
extra.

How about you follow your president's advice and kick your addiction
for mid-east oil for starters?

Just for the record, this is not my point you're responding to
.
just responded to a bunch of statements -but not directed solely at
you.
You know what they mean by a 'group discussion' :-).

And just for the record, Bush is a hypocrite.

he may have technocrats advising him on what to tell the public -so
that the naive ones concu with it while the wise ones do the same
-albeit for entirely different reasons.

Its all about money and power, not justice and ethics. Just like CEOs.

what if his statements are factually correct?

His= Bush? WMD in Iraq? Where do you get that he could be factually correct in this. What are you talking about "his"?

Ask govt to provide mass transportation
from home to office, and buy a bicycle or tri-cycle to do
enviroment-friendly shopping.

I have a bycycle. I also live about 250 meters above the
town and have two bad knees.

sorry about that. Mass transportation and town planning is woefully
absent in the US -but made available in poorer countries to a greater
extent.

In 1966, I bicycled 16 miles, one way, to my job interview. I got the
interview, and I got the job. And, I bicycled back home after the
interview. I was wearing a suit, too. And, it was a hot summer day.

In 1967-68, I bicycled 5 miles each way to and from work, for two years.
I was not the only one who did this.

so now you have evidence from your own mouth of a dramatic rise in
consumption [cars/SUVs + gas] without an accompanying increase in
productivity.

I see you have already forgotten the study which I quoted which said that the US is the most competitive in the world, and our exports are greater than anyone elses, too.

The world around you is closer to your living std in 1967
and less in line with your current splurge.

And, I told you, also from published material, that both India and China are increasing their consumptions at rates far greater than the US is now. In a few decades YOU will exceed that of the USA.

If 5 billion additional
people starts consuming the way 300 million normal people do -the
environment will go for a toss and demand/supply curve will shift
exponentially to the demand side.

You can buy lots of oil from Russia. They have a lot. New oil is being discoverd in the ocean areas all the time.

So, instead of lamenting that we are
spoiling your party -you ought to find ways to curb your spending and
get it in line with that of people who are as productive as you are.
Understand, there is nothing about your skin colour or nationality that
ENTITLES you to a higher std of living.

There is nothing in India's cheap labor that says it entitles Indians to US jobs. But there is plenty in India's caste system that will promise you priviledged guys lots of better jobs, based on your birthright.

All of this is feasible if you actually
believe that your bill of rights aka citizenship does NOT entitle you
to any of the goodies you currently enjoy.

Fusion will work...but its 10 to 20 years out...

I worked a bit on fusion in the mid '70s. It was 10 to 20 years
out then, and had been 10 or 20 years out 20 years before
that. ;-)

whats the drawback to getting it working now?

That same thing it has always been, we don't know how to
make it work or even if we ever can. In the experiment
presented in England, A. C., L. A. Berry, J. F. Lyon, R. L.
Martin and G. L. Morgan, "Neutron Emission From ORMAK",
presented at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the Division of
Plasma Physics of the American Physical Society, (1974),
we produced fusion using neutral deuterium beams injected
into a deuterium backgorund plasma, but we were very far
from energy breakeven. The field has advanced since then,

what are they trying to do it in France at the new intl centre for
fusion [or something like that]?

Fusion is a waste.

lots of taxpayer money is going in there. The govt here is saying "me
too" and rushing to pour taxpayer money into it -lest it miss the bus.

All a waste.

but I from what I've read IMO anyone who thinks commercial
fusion power is going to be viable in the first half of this
century is an optimist.

looks like the Ind govt is aiming to buy a ton of nuclear fission
plants from the US to improve its supply of electricity -and the
pricing will probably be competitive.

Because India doesn't know how to do it.

It does. The govt endured years of international sanction and yet
developed many reactors [including a fast-breeder one]. They are
looking for a dramatic increase in energy generation in line with the
booming economy/oil shocks and it is not so much about getting past a
technology curve.

Then you don't need what India is going to get from the USA.

solar is not
dense enough to make much difference by itself to the
grid..but does serve the individual well in getting him off
the grid, with a wind mill and conservation measures...

India has very high solar density over most of its landmass. But solar
equipment is capital-intensive. If it gets cheaper, more Indians could
get off the grid -if only the equipment can withstand a heat wave
during an Indian summer.

Answering your question, probably yes if it happened
immediately, although it would still take a while. If we

something like a community solar equipment and community mass transport
should help.

don't do something soon, I think it could be too late until
the next ice age orbital configuration. And if the methane
hydrate deposits destabilize... There are plenty of things
trying to kill our puny species off, but we shouldn't be
trying so hard to help them out.

do we have an ice age in the offing in the absence of a meteor?

thanks

In _Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum: How Humans Took
Control of Climate_ , William F. Ruddiman claims that global
warming averted at least the beginnings of one in the last
couple of hundred years.

not sure I understand. why do ice ages occur -other than asteroid
crashes?

I think either Russel is joking or Ruddiman is joking or both.

He hasn;t claimed anything yet.

I have.
