Bottom line is that it may be difficult to get a really
research oriented job without a PhD, or even with one,
but with luck you might. However, I'd seriously worry
about whether the grass really ends up being greener
on the other side of the fence. No job is perfect or even
exactly as advertised. You may be in the best available
situation you can have, as annoying/boring/depressing
as that may be. Good luck and let us know if you have
any other questions.

Cheers,
Russell
Thanks for your input - I appreciate it. I know that better positions
are available as a I just passed up on a good opportunity for various
reasons. But I see those positions come along only about once a year.
At least now I am planning on what I will do the next time a good
opportunity comes along. And what I can do in the meantime to make
myself more marketable. I may just revert to grad student mode and do
extra work (writing up work that my boss has said he would like me to
do, but never given me the time for) on the weekends. Producing some
written work for peer-reviewed publication would make my boss happy,
pad my resume, and possibly even cause changes that would cause me to
want to remain where I am. For now, I am glad to be planning and not
just reacting to my circumstances. My life was (and is) so busy I
didn't really plan forward. Not feeling bored anymore - more like
cautiously enthusiastic!
