Thanks everyone for the advice ( i guess). Admitedly it is very
depressing but nontheless it did help.
Here is another question: everyone claims that obtaining a PhD is a bad
idea but then so is having an MD. How is it that a person can continue
within the science field without having to get royally screwed over?
The more you can talk with people who have a lot of life's experience, the more you will be able to judge what is going on. A major factor in life is how much you are going to serve under the thumb of a boss, and whether that boss is good or bad or somewhere in between. Then, what kind of organization is the boss working within. Then you have to ask about cycles in the economy (boom->bust->boom) and how you cope with that. Then, is your job going to be offshored. And, just as bad, what will you do after you reach the age of 40 (where age-discrimination begins and employers would rather hire someone, anyone between the age of 20-39, and not 40 or more). Sex discrimination is out there, too.
My current best advice is to look for a pursuit where you can do freelance work and have many independent customers so if you lose one or two, you still have others that will keep the money flowing in so you can pay your rent and pay for food. Its not an easy task and that is why most people will work for a single employer.
