Re: modern science = underfunded projects

Probably the worst thing going on in the USA, now, (besides our idiot
president), is this vast sea change in attitude among our executives. It
is a shift from "doing good business" to "rip off, cheat, steal, trick,
etc." any way you can. The proof is in books like Michael Lewis' "The
Money Culture" and "Barbarians at the Gate". And, US CEOs make so very
very much more than rank and file than CEOs anywhere else in the world
(this is also regularly covered in the WSJ, so I'm not making it up).

An interesting question is why this shift has happened? Apparently it
is because market conditions favor this type of business over the old
one. I think it is because of monopolization and extreme concentration
of capital in few hands. Those are conditions when you stop worrying
about "doing good business".

I think monopolization is not the reason; in fact, there is no more
monopolization than it is used to be.

The reall reason for switching from the "doing good business" attitude
to "steal and rip off by any means" attitude in the CEOs and businesses
is as follows. The productivity became too high. The standard of living
of many people improved; they started to desire even more higher
standard of living than the economy could allow. Thus, it is impossible
for CEOs' to increase the share price by doing good business; they
necessarily have to retort to artifical unlawful increase of share
price. This is what the market requires from CEOs, and this is the kind
of CEOs which come on top dragged by market.

I would suggest an analogy in science. There are too many scientists
who forge scientific results and get grants based on those forgeries.
Is this because there is a "monopolization" of science ? No. The reason
is that there are too many wannabe scientists everyone of whom needs a
grant. Thus, there is an overcompetition between scientists. And this
overcompetition brings foul play with it as well, as working by honest
means is impossible anymore to get a grant.
