My intern finished his employment with us. One of my bosses was so
happy with our work that he offered the student a casual employment,
one day a week. The project would be formulated by me and would be done
under my supervision. The student said it would take too much time from
him. I wonder what is going on ? These are very good money. When _I_
was undergraduate student, I would kill for an opportunity to work one
day a week and do what I liked to do and get a good pay. This is is a
Y-Gen'er. He does not care about money. He needs a perfect fit of the
job with his plans. Where the society is going to. I am strating to
feel that I would like to bring an immigrant student from overseas...
he will be doing stuff without complaining or without looking for
better fit between the job and his private life. He will not have a
private life... hur-hur-hur...
I think getting this intern was a very good occurence for my career.
When intern was presenting the results of his work to the bosses, they
addressed me as a "supersvisor", a "manager". In other words, they
re-classified me as a "manager" and it will now be easy for them to
give me the projects which require supervision of underlings. This is
what I want.
The other moment which I noticed about the career mechanics. The guy
who offered the future funding for the casual position to my intern was
the recently appointed guy. He is the dept boss whose projects are
severly underfunded. He is desperate to build his empire and spread his
influence. He knows that one can get a good value out of students with
a minimum of investment. Most importantly, he is also ready to give me
the supervision duties over the student... this is were I recommend
myself as a manager. I hope this is the long-awaited opportunity break.
