I have a friend who didn't get the high ChemE GPA (his was 3.0 to 3.2);
he got rejected by all ChemE employers (Amgen-to-Texaco) but he still
got into a graduate pharmacy (PharmD) program and is now earning
~$95K/yr, more than all the so-called A/A- students who'd decided to
slog it out with an Exxon-Mobil or Dow and he gets calls from
recruiters all the time if he ever wants to switch jobs.
Your friends 3.0-3.2 GPA in ChemE. is easily the equivalent of a 3.99 if the
time and effort were applied to some fuzzier curriculum like business
management. I would also venture (confessing that I don't really know!) that
the pharmacy program looked like playtime in nursery school compared to
ChemE.
He did roughly 50% of the undergrad ChemE work to get his PharmD,
graduated with solid marks (I think almost 0.5 higher than undergrad),
and had several offers upon graduation.
Now, after getting established, he's continually hounded by recruiters
and can easily leave his cushy job for another whenever he wants
whereas his so-called genius ChemE classmates (the ones with A's who
didn't opt for an MBA) are struggling to keep their jobs (hint: unpaid
O/T), benefits, etc and have little mobility. Some of them can't
believe that the so-called underdog classmate could earn almost $100K
dispensing pills. The denial among snobby engineers is astounding.
