There appeared another Alex cartoon. It is remarkable to me. Alex and
his friend Steve were laid off from the investment bank. They suffered
being unable to find another employment, and moved through unqualified
jobs. Half a year or a year later, Steve was appointed the Head of
corporate finance of the same bank. Their unemployment story resonated
somewhat with me, because I was laid off about the same time, and was
watching every day as Alex and Steve were unsuccessfully striving to
find employment -- just like I was. Obviously, the adventures of the
fictious characters Alex and Steve reflected the processes happening in
the world's economy. I was under influnce of the same processes as
well.
I was glad to see that Alex and Steve finally found jobs. Finally, they
were re-employed by the bank which laid them off earlier. Only this
time Steve was hired to be the Head of the financial services
department. This was a sign to me that the world's economy was picking
up and I might find a job soon, too. In fact, I found a job about the
same time, too. I was happy. I continued reading the daily cartoon.
However, the boss told to Steve that he was incompetent manager and did
not perform well. It became clear that Steve would be fired soon. I was
scared to see that, because I might be laid off, too. Maybe, the
cartoonist would "fire" Steve because the economy had gone through a
pseudo-recovery, and now was the time of the correction. After that, I
watched with sunking heart for about a year, as the boss pointed to
inadequaces of Steve from time to time. And, finally... Steve was fired
from his place -- yesterday. It finally happened,

But what really happened ? Steve was simply moved from the highly
influential position of the Head of corporate finance to head another
department, the compliance department,

See, Steve had joined high-level management. So his bosses could not
dismiss him for his incompetence. This is not how things are done in
the world of high management. He was _transferred_ into a position of a
formally the same level, only being non-influential at all, because at
new place he had no resources to manage.
The corollary is that likewise I would not be simply dismissed if
anything happens. I would be moved into another employment state
(perhaps a casual worker, a "contractor") where they will continue
paying me at least some money. And this is what is important for me --
to receive money so that I could support my needs.
The older you get the better your life becomes. Up to a certain age.
