Who was the keeper of the FAQ and what happened to the frequently asked

I think a lot of those who didn't agree with the prevaling "everything sucks" mindset were chased away or just got bored having the same argument over and over again.

Same arguments over and over again: Dave Jensen's "same arguments" over and over again were: "have a positive attitude and be persistent" but he never offered proof. Instead, he would go, like other rah-rah-rah types, and show everyone that everyone who was successful also had these two attributes. Since you are faculty, you should know that this is not proof that it works. You need to start with a sample population, say 100, of people who have positive attitudes and are persistent and then look where all 100 are some 10, 20, 30 years down the road. The picture is very different.

I have friends who "made it" in this business and those that didn't. Rah-rah doesn't get you very far,

Well, I know guys that put lock, stock, and barrell into the rah-rah-rah stuff.

but you have to have hope, otherwise you might as
well just pack it in.

Partly yes and partly no. I'll tell you a little story. A true story. I'll try to keep it short. Wife and I owned our previous house, then I discovered the guy acccross the street had his real estate assessment about 4 percent higher than I did. I was mad because he had a much better view, much nicer house, etc, and his assessment should have been more like 20% or more higher (based on what I could look up in the public records). So, I appealed my assessmnet. It got turned down, flat. So, I re-appealed to the next higher level. Including documents, photos, comparisons...all a thick pad of stuff. And, this involved a hearing with me physically appearing on front of a board of people for 30 minutes. Right at the beginning I asked them "Hey, do these things do any good?" The lady said right back to me: "OOOHHHHHH YYYEEESSSSS TTHHHEEEEYYYYY DOOOOOOO!" What happened? I got turned down again, flat. So, I was talking with one of the real estate agents about this: "Say, have you ever helped people get 'comparables' for tax assessment appeals?" She said "Yeah, all
the time" so then I said about how many. She said hundreds. So I said: "You wouldn't have happened to find out for any of them how they turned
out did you?" she said "They all got flat turned down!" I said "So, its a kangaroo court over there, right?" She said: "Right" and the only option after that is go to the state court, pay a lawyer, take time
off, and end up costing a bunch of money that _might_ take years to recoup.

So, yes, its good to have hope. Buuuuuut, its good to have a _basis_ or _estimate_ for that hope. Had I known the whole assessment review process
was rigged like that, I wouldn't have got my hopes up. As I got older, I began, more and more, to ask as many people as possible questions like: What can go wrong here? What should I pay particular attention to? What works, what doesn't work, etc.

There is more to success than being persistent. Some
people are persistent, but so much so that they don't change course even when they know they are headed for a reef. That said, you can't win the lottery if you never buy a ticket, right?

Hey, here is my 'come-back' to that: Better to sell lottery tickets than to buy them. Get my drift?

"Entropy Fighter" has been the only one

^^^^^^^^

posting anything remotely related to s.r.c., lately.

And, I'll offer that I've been the only one who has _always_ posted a response, suggestion, or commentary on _all_ of his posts. Only a few other people have responded to a few of his posts. His posts presented
a problem or situation, my posts offered responses to the best of my
abilities to his posts. Funny if none of my responses got to your server.

Art, has there ever been a post on s.r.c that you DIDN'T respond to? :)

1. Yeah. A small small number (eg. spam, posted resumes, posted job openings, and the Great Sovok Flame War on src back in '94 where there were megabyte and up to 5 megabyte single posts of flame like I doubt you ever saw [or, tell me you know what I'm talking about]).

2. And, by the way, what is wrong with one enjoying himself?

3. And, if you don't like the show, then turn the channel.

As a matter of my opinion, I think your own post here, itself, has nothing to do with career issues.

I suppose you would be happier if I was discussing the grilling of some animal in Australia?

Um... I thought it was an Austrailian animal being grilled somewhere in the USA. And, when I first read it and didn't know what it was...I googled it and got a quick answer. So... I learned a new word.

TD, as far as I'm concerned, you can discuss anything you want here, any way you want, anytime you want, any length you want. Just please don't get upset if someone else makes comments on it and comments you might not like. This is all about challenge (and you can take that any way you want). Testing your mettle (or however it is spelled), knowledge, patience, maintaining your calm/tranquility, interpretation, composition,
and half to one dozen other intellectual traits, blah-blah, and keep your
wits as sharp as possible. They say 'excercise your brain to fight off Alzheimers'...so this is part of it too. It doesn't matter to me if its on topic or off topic: Be educated or entertained, or both, thereby.

The worst thing guys can do is just sit out there are read all this stuff and do nothing, say nothing, think nothing. Not necessarily in that order.
