I think the person to ask about "fluidic space" is probably Leonard
Mlodinow, author of "Feynman's Rainbow":

Mlodinow earned a PhD in theoretical physics from Berkeley, but gave up
on academia after doing a postdoc at Caltech in order to take a job
screenwriting for STNG. It wouldn't surprise me if he's the person who
deserves: 1) credit for the fairly deep technological plausibility of
the newer ST series, as well as, 2) blame for the series' overuse of
advanced technology as a substitute for plot.
BTW, I'm pretty sure that Species 8472 was introduced in the ST: Voyager
series (Captain Janeway, semi-borg 7-of-9, holographic doctor, etc).
