Re: my career in August

Over the years, I had three supervisors who were in serious need of psychiatric counselling. I have no idea what I did to trigger them, though, in the case of one, I suspect he was having problems with his stepson during the time I was his subordinate and I happened to be his lightning rod. It's understandable, but it's still no excuse for making my life miserable.

Its a fact of life that people in a population will have mixtures of likes and dislikes. How you deal with it is the question.

That's true, but that doesn't justify what he did to me. It was unprofessional and unethical and he should have known better.

With another boss, I remember stopping by his house one day to deliver some software we were going to use. A few days earlier, I bought a brand new car and paid for it in cash. Just before I left, I invited him to take a look at it. When I mentioned how I financed it, he looked like he was ready to skin me alive, almost as if my buying my car in cash was a personal affront to him. It didn't take long to convince me he was barking mad.

Its not a good idea to brag (unless you want to make enemies).

What about house-warming parties?

Its very
uncommon to buy anything expensive without financing. Only the top 1-2% of the population is rich. And, by driving Mercedes etc all around out in public is like bragging about how rich they are and its all ego. I'd get upset, too.

First of all, I saved the money to buy the car over several years. It was none of his business how I got it or, for that matter, how much I paid for it, but, if he had been sufficiently open-minded, he should have given me the benefit of the doubt.

Secondly, it wasn't a fancy car--it was a VW Golf, and one with few frills on it and it wasn't all that expensive.

In view of that, does his reaction make sense?
