Re: H-power in test tube project suspended.

The vendor rang me at 8:30 am this morning to say he had found the faults on
the amplifier and was going to fix them if he could.

I understood him to say that he made the amplifier himself 20 years ago. I
suppose he knows it backwards.

He just rang to say it could not be fixed and that he will refund my money.

As he is interested in the project he is going to bring his linear over to
try the test himself on my set up.

The test will only take about an hour.

The vendor of my linear amplifier that failed came round and took it back
and said that he would fix it for an additional fee.

If he does then I can try 400 watts again without spending too much money.
I now have to build matching units for 75 ohms of the linear to the 50
ohms of the transmitter and reactor.

These will consist a transformer of 5 turns to the 50 ohm side and 6 turns
to the 75 ohm side.

I will see if I can ionize the hydrogen and if I can start the generation
of power.

I put the capacitor in circuit so now I can tune the reactor to the
transmitter. I put my antenna tuning unit between the reactor and the
transmitter and found I could achieve a VSWR of less than 1.1 at the
transmitter. I ran 100 watts into the cell for 10 minutes and found the
tube got quite hot to touch probably 60C. The wires were slightly warm at
the end of the test. The transmitted power as measured by the power meter
dropped slightly to 95 watt so I increased it to 100 watt again. The
transmitted power was 70 watt and the reflected power about 0.1 watt. The
VSWR did not vary during the test.

The ATU is on top of the transmitter. The capacitor is on the right.

I will have to save up to buy the 1KW linear amplifier as I don't want to
get into debt.

One firm that makes them in the UK was having difficulties and has been
taken over by another company.

I have just turned down the offer of a 500 watt linear for £300(GBP). It
was second hand and was "probably" working but 500 watt is not enough as
I need 1 KW.
